About James
James Sumner spent over two decades leading transformation across some of the most complex organisations in the NHS. When he joined Strasys, it was because he found something different: a firm that builds decision infrastructure that stays.
James shaped his career in the NHS from 1999, starting in primary care before moving into the acute sector in 2005. He went on to hold senior leadership roles at Salford Royal and Stockport before becoming Chief Executive of Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He then became CEO of several trusts in Liverpool before becoming the founding Group Chief Executive of NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, one of the most complex hospital collaborations in England. Under his leadership, the Group moved services safely into the new Royal Liverpool Hospital, reconfigured specialist services across the city, and vastly improved CQC ratings and performance.
He joined Strasys because he saw what others had not yet built: analytics and innovation that change how leaders think, not just what they see.
At Strasys, James is Executive Partner, helping develop partnerships with public and private healthcare institutions and bringing his deep knowledge of the sector to bear on the firm's growth across the health system. He combines the operational discipline of running some of the largest and most complex trusts in the country with Strasys's proprietary Decision Intelligence approach, helping leadership teams move from diagnosis to action with confidence. His work spans acute, women's and specialist care integration, system-wide improvement, and large-scale digital transformation.
He was drawn to Strasys by a conviction that the most complex challenges in healthcare require a fundamentally different kind of partner: one that combines deep analytics with creativity, and leaves organisations stronger than it found them. James is also a Non-Executive Director at the Northern Health Science Alliance, representing NHS trust members on the board as it drives collaboration and innovation across the North of England's health and life sciences sector.
